When Kite got home from school that afternoon, he wanted a blow-by-blow account. He sat at the kitchen table drinking tea and eating biscuits while Swan consulted her notebook. She had written her report of the lunch appointment as soon as they had returned, but as she read it aloud, it all sounded rather inconsequential—and Kite said so.

“I can’t believe you didn’t find any clues! I told you I should have been Sherlock Holmes.”

“And Mr. Court didn’t ask you anything else?” Venetia peered over Swan’s shoulder, trying to read her untidy scrawl. “Didn’t give you even a hint of what he’s looking for?”

Liberty shook her head. “Not a sausage, save for the ones in his toad-in-the-hole.”

“I hate toad-in-the-hole when we have it for school lunch!” Kite pretended to stick his finger down his throat to demonstrate his disgust. “The sausages are always gristly like witches’ fingers.”

“Which, no doubt, you have eaten on numerous occasions, thus qualifying you to make the comparison?” Venetia teased him.

“Mr. Court did, in fact, say one thing worthy of note.”

They all looked at Swan, and having captured their attention, she paused for a moment for what Hawk had always called actio effectus when it was used in the courtroom.

“Just before he left, he said, ‘Perhaps, Liberty, you’re overthinking this.’”

“He never calls me Liberty.”

“Precisely.”
